Woods Wins at Boyd
Dustin Woods driving the #05 won the SST Main event Friday night at Boyd Raceway. He started on the pole and it was all Woods all the way. Even after a late race caution closed the field, Woods pulled away with no serious challenge for the lead. That doesn’t me there wasn’t any racing going on. Mike Herring in the #90 and Danny Merrell in #41 battled for second for several laps with Herring taking the second spot on the final lap just edging Merrell into third. The next scheduled SST event will be Saturday May 14th at the Devil’s Bowl.
Hammock Wins At KSP
As the SST sprints were being pushed out on the track in preparation for the A Main event, the lights went out at KSP. It was only a short intermission but as I cruised around the darkened track, checking with the drivers, I overheard Jerry Hammock say “If I had known we were going to race in the dark I would have made a few more adjustments to the car.” In typical Hammock style, his sense of humor was right to the point. The lights came on and so did the best race of the new season. Kenny Venable in car #59 started on the outside of the front row and darted out to a commanding lead. He held that position for more than half the race which went flag to flag with no cautions. Then it was the #67 of Rodney “Bones” Henderson’s turn to lead as he worked up from his tenth starting position. He passed Venable as they came up behind lapped traffic, going to the high side when Venable tried the low groove. Henderson looked strong. But with two laps to go, Hammock in #4 who started 12th, edged past to take the lead and win leaving Henderson to finish second with Venable in third. Making a hard charge from the rear was Jason Howell in #44. Howell who won the previous SST event’s feature, got the honor of carrying the yellow passing ribbon and starting in the 20th and final qualifying position. He made it to fourth in a valiant attempt.
The next SST event is scheduled for Friday April 22 at Boyd Raceway.
